The Refectory - a place where pilgrims meet
The main Pilgrim Refectory is one of the most important buildings at the Shrine. It is the meeting place of pilgrims and where friendships are renewed and great food is consumed.
It is built on two levels: the upper level is where the residents dine and accommodates 180 diners at one time and Norton’s Café Bar, open to all, is on the lower level.

Meals are served everyday during the Pilgrimage season and we pride ourselves in producing quality food from local producers where possible. We serve hot meals of the day and as an alternative you can choose from our salad bar where we have a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes.
Wine by the glass or bottle can be purchased from the servery.
Staff are on hand to assist with carrying trays and helping where required.
Special diets are catered for and all kitchen staff are trained in food hygiene and the new allergen regulations. The refectory holds the local authority 5 star food hygiene rating for cleanliness and procedures.
Everyone is welcome at Norton’s Café Bar. It is open everyday with the exception of December 24th-26th (see below for Christmas 2016 opening) and 10 days in early January. Norton’s Café Bar is normally open from 10am until 11.00 pm during the Pilgrimage Season but in the winter months the time of closing may be 4.30 pm depending on the number of pilgrims in residence.
We serve a wide variety of homemade cakes, favourites being Norfolk shortcake, Nelson’s slice, Walsingham honey cake, Victoria sandwich and our wonderful scones - fruit and cheese - made daily. Gluten free cakes and chocolate brownies are also available.
A wide selection of specialist beverages including fresh bean coffee, single-serve cafetieres, loose leaf and fruit teas, homemade lemonade and elderflower cordial.
There is a very popular light meals menu (available between 11.30 am and 4.30 pm) which includes a hot 'dish-of-the-day', home-made soup, a variety of sandwiches and panini, a hearty "ploughman's" with local Norfolk cheeses and a children's lunch-box.
The Café Bar is fully licensed and a wide range of wines, local beers/lagers (both bottled and draught) and spirits are on sale. For those pilgrims eating in the main dining room, drinks can be taken from the Café Bar up to the main Refectory.
With doors opening on to a garden terrace, Norton's Café Bar provides both indoor and outdoor seating. Although dogs are not allowed on the Shrine site - with the exception of "assistance" dogs - we are more than happy for all dogs and their owners to use the outdoor seating area.
The Cafe-Bar is closed from 24th - 26th December; open from 27th December - 3rd January; closed from 4th - 13th January; reopens 14th January.
Just for the Day?
