Guardian of The Shrine appointed Bishop of Lewes

29 April 2020 – Downing Street today announced that The Reverend Prebendary William Hazlewood, Vicar of Dartmouth and Dittisham and a Guardian of the Holy House of The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, has been appointed as Bishop of Lewes in the Diocese of Chichester.

Fr Will trained for the priesthood at St Stephen’s House, Oxford and was ordained a priest in 2002. He has served in parishes in the Dioceses of Bristol and Oxford, and since 2011 in his present parish in Exeter. He was made a Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral in 2017.

There was great rejoicing when Fr Will was elected as a Guardian of the Holy House in 2019, strengthening links between The Shrine and the West Country. He and his family have been regular pilgrims to Walsingham for many years. He has actively promoted devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham and pilgrimage to her Shrine and brought pilgrims of all ages to England’s Nazareth.

The Shrine is delighted to hear the news of Fr Will’s appointment as Bishop of Lewes and joins with the many who will be praying for him and his family as he prepares to serve the Church as a shepherd, teacher and pastor of Christ’s flock.  A date for his consecration as bishop has yet to be announced.
